A LETTER FROM ERIKA

Hi, I'm Erika!

I have been drawing custom pet portraits for over ten years, and I want to tell you a bit about them. Not only how much the recipients love and cherish them, but what it means to me as well.

FIRST,

The style I've developed for my portraits is black and white photorealism, and the way I do them with such care and precision captures every tiny detail of every perfect, furry face.

Many people receive these portraits as gifts, and they come to me to return the favor and commission portraits for their friends and family members.

Sometimes they are gifts welcoming a new member to the family, or for a loved one who has a special relationship with their cat or dog. And sometimes, they memorialize a beloved friend gone too soon.

Whatever the reason, each portrait brings their owner joy in the best of times, and comfort when a friend is lost.Which brings me to why I started doing them in the first place.

REAL QUICK -- FLASHBACK TIME!

I have been doing portraits since 2014, and in 2019 I found myself job searching and thinking, what is the point of all this?

I had spent so many years in an office doing meaningless email-job stuff, and I felt empty inside. I wanted to make a difference in peoples' lives, but I couldn't quite figure out how.

I realized that if I could leave my dead end admin job and focus on my art, I could make a difference in peoples lives daily.

Drawing people's best friends - those relationships of unconditional love that stayed by our side during career changes, love life ups and downs, new family members, cross country moves - gave my art purpose and meaning.

A piece of myself, of my life long compassion for animals, a piece of my spirit and light and joy, that I could give to others to make their day, their lives, just a little bit better.

In 2023, the meaning of these portraits became so much deeper for me.

My beloved companion, a little chihuahua terrier mix named Lula who I met 15 years prior, passed away. She had a wonderful life and I knew it was her time - she wanted to stay so badly, but her body was so tired.

Watching her grow old and having to say goodbye was one of the hardest and most beautiful experiences of my life.

It has been almost a year now, and I still think of her daily, if not hourly. And I know this experience is shared by so many of us who rescued animals in our early 20s, shared our formative adult years together, experiencing all of lifes biggest moments side by side, only to say goodbye too soon, because it's always too soon.

But one of the nicest things is that so many people for whom I have done these portraits have written me and said my artwork brought them comfort in their hardest times.

That seeing their pets with bright eyes, full of life in my portraits of them helped them remember each of their beloved pets as they were at their best, when they were by our side.

That is why I started doing these years ago, and why I continue to do them now, because what is the purpose of art if not to elicit emotion and bring beauty into the world?

SO......

Let me draw your dog! Or your cat. Or your mother's cat, your best friend's dog, your coworker's ferret.

Below this letter, I’ve explained how to order a pet portrait. It's REALLY simple - place an order, reply to the email with the photo you'd like drawn, and I will take it from there!

Feel free to pass along this page to anyone you think would like one.

My hope is that you’ll love what you receive and cherish it for years to come.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter. I look forward to drawing your furry (or feathered, or scaly!) friend!
